The Senate has officially approved Aminu Yusuf as the new Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), along with Joseph Haruna Kigbu and Tonga Betara Bularafa, who were appointed as national commissioners within the Commission.
This decision came after Senator Victor Umeh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, presented the committee’s screening report during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Representing Anambra Central, Senator Umeh informed the Senate that the nominees underwent a comprehensive vetting process and were deemed fit for their respective roles.
“The candidates appeared before the committee for evaluation on Tuesday, October 14, 2025,” he stated. “No petitions or criminal allegations were brought against any of them. They exhibited the necessary readiness and expertise required for the positions they have been nominated to fill.”
The nominees confirmed by the committee include: Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman, Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State as Commissioner, and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as Commissioner.
Senator Umeh highlighted that the committee conducted thorough due diligence by requesting essential documents such as detailed resumes, clearance certificates from the Code of Conduct Bureau, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) prior to the screening.
Each nominee delivered a presentation to the committee, which was followed by an in-depth question-and-answer session designed to evaluate their knowledge and capability regarding the Commission’s responsibilities.
“We are confident in the nominees’ credentials, experience, and overall aptitude,” Umeh affirmed.
Following the presentation, the Senate moved into the Committee of the Whole to deliberate on the Standing Committee’s recommendations.
During this session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a voice vote on the nominations, which was overwhelmingly approved.
It is important to note that President Bola Tinubu had formally requested the Senate to conduct the screening and confirmation of these nominees through a letter dated July 31, 2025. This letter was officially read on the Senate floor by President Godswill Akpabio on October 7.
