Agents of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have successfully uncovered and shut down an unauthorized mineral storage operation located in the Onne area of Rivers State.

This crackdown was initiated following reliable intelligence reports and executed by NSCDC mining marshals in partnership with representatives from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals.

According to a statement released by the Corps’ national public relations officer, CSC Babawale Afolabi, the enforcement team, led by DSC Emmanuel Abiahu, found multiple warehouses hoarding extracted minerals without the necessary permits, licenses, or proof of royalty payments to the federal government.

Afolabi highlighted that such illicit activities not only jeopardize the nation’s economic stability but also present significant environmental hazards and safety concerns for local communities.

The operation aligns with directives from the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, who has persistently advocated for the protection of Nigeria’s solid mineral resources and the establishment of a transparent, regulated environment for lawful miners, investors, and the communities reliant on this sector for their livelihoods.

The Corps issued a stern warning to all operators in the region to adhere strictly to legal requirements or face stringent enforcement measures. NSCDC reaffirmed its dedication to protecting lives, economic interests, and the environment through ongoing monitoring and cooperation with relevant stakeholders.

“This initiative directly responds to the Commandant General’s call to safeguard Nigeria’s mineral wealth and foster a fair, regulated space for legitimate mining activities,” the statement emphasized.

“Operators must comply with existing laws or risk decisive action. The Corps remains unwavering in its mission to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment through continuous surveillance and partnership with stakeholders,” it added.

The NSCDC also urged the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to help combat illegal mining, ensuring that Nigeria’s natural resources benefit both its citizens and the nation as a whole.
