Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emphasized the potential of sports as a powerful catalyst for fostering peace in Plateau State and enhancing national cohesion.
He made these remarks in Abuja while welcoming a delegation from the University of Jos, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Tanko Ishaya. The visit aimed to explore collaborative efforts in preparation for the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) event, set to take place in Jos, Plateau State.
Atiku highlighted that the proposed collaboration aligns with mutual priorities, especially in the realms of education and youth empowerment through athletic programs.

Drawing from his experience as the founder of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Atiku underscored how sports serve as an effective medium for peacebuilding and societal progress.
“Having established the American University of Nigeria, I understand firsthand how sports can be instrumental in nurturing peace and advancing youth development,” he added.
Professor Ishaya, accompanied by a team of advisors organizing the Games, pointed out the strategic importance of selecting Jos as the host city. This decision comes at a crucial time when initiatives are underway to encourage reconciliation, stimulate local businesses, and engage young people in positive activities.
During the visit, Atiku was honored as one of the Patrons of Jos 2025 NUGA. He expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged his full support for the University’s efforts to successfully host the event.
“I am honored to be named a Patron of Jos 2025 NUGA and have assured them of my unwavering support,” he stated.
The upcoming Jos 2025 Games are anticipated to bring together student-athletes from universities nationwide, fostering competition and camaraderie across the country.
