On Thursday, more than 3,000 members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) gathered to protest the recent deregistration of their organization by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
During the demonstration held at the CAC headquarters, NYCN Secretary General, Barrister Abubakar Suleiman, emphasized that as a senior legal practitioner, the Registrar General of CAC, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN), should refrain from removing the council’s registration without awaiting the outcome of ongoing court proceedings.
He stated, “Thousands of Nigerian youths have assembled here today to oppose the blatant disregard for the law and the arbitrary actions of the CAC Registrar General. Nigeria operates as a federation governed by the rule of law, not chaos. The National Youth Council of Nigeria, recognized as the foremost youth organization, is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.”
“Just two days ago, the CAC announced the withdrawal of NYCN’s registration certificate and established a committee to oversee the council’s nigeria-philippines-strengthen-ties-on-labour-migration/” title=”…, Philippines Strengthen Ties on Labour Migration “>affairs. This move comes despite an active appeal case against the CAC in the Court of Appeal. Previously, we secured a favorable ruling in the Federal High Court, which affirmed that the CAC lacks the authority to deregister the NYCN.”
“Regrettably, the Registrar General proceeded to remove the NYCN from the CAC’s official registry and publicized this action, alongside appointing a committee to manage the council’s operations. We are here to reject this unlawful conduct. Such impunity cannot be tolerated.”
“It is clear that the Registrar General’s actions undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which we wholeheartedly support. Our protest today marks the beginning of a sustained campaign lasting 30 days, demanding the immediate removal of the Registrar General by the President.”
“We have mobilized youth representatives from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local government areas to stage similar demonstrations at CAC offices nationwide.”
“The same Registrar General currently faces a pending appeal case, yet has unlawfully deregistered the NYCN despite the ongoing litigation and our prior court victory. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a fellow legal professional, I find this conduct deeply troubling and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of someone in his position.”
“We stand united in saying no to this abuse of power and demand respect for the rule of law.”
