Maduka Okoye has made his way back into Udinese’s starting lineup for their Serie A fixture against Cremonese on Monday evening, putting an end to a challenging two-month absence, according to Soccernet.ng.
The Nigerian shot-stopper was sidelined just before the 2025/26 season kicked off in August due to allegations linking some of his close contacts to betting misconduct.
While the inquiry did not directly accuse Okoye, Italian football authorities imposed a two-month suspension, causing him to miss Udinese’s first six league games.
In Okoye’s absence, Romanian goalkeeper Răzvan Sava stepped in but managed only a single clean sheet while conceding nine goals, as Udinese struggled to find stability.
Okoye’s suspension concluded on October 16 during the international break, and head coach Kosta Runjaic promptly reinstated him as the first-choice goalkeeper.

Runjaic reaffirms trust in his primary goalkeeper
Udinese’s manager, Kosta Runjaic, has publicly expressed his unwavering confidence in Okoye, affirming the Nigerian as his preferred goalkeeper despite the recent controversy and time away from the pitch.
“Okoye has always been our number one, even when he was unavailable. I’m glad to have him back. I can’t confirm if he’ll start against Cremonese, but he’s fully prepared,” Runjaic shared on the club’s official platform.
“He has trained diligently and used this period for self-reflection, coming back stronger. We’re pleased to have him back and trust in his abilities.”
Runjaic also commended Sava’s dedication and professionalism during Okoye’s enforced absence.
“Sava delivered some commendable performances; he also filled in for Okoye last season, which was a valuable experience. He has my complete trust and is set to improve further. Over recent months, he has grown both as a player and as an individual,” the coach added.
Udinese’s upcoming match at Stadio Giovanni Zini against Cremonese marks their first game post-international break and could symbolize a fresh start for both Okoye and the team after a turbulent beginning to the season.
Consequences for the Super Eagles and Nwabali
Okoye’s comeback to club football is likely to impact the Nigerian national team dynamics, especially considering Stanley Nwabali’s recent disciplinary challenges.
Since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nwabali has been Nigeria’s preferred goalkeeper, playing a key role in the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying matches in September and October.
The Chippa United custodian recorded two clean sheets across four games, helping Nigeria secure a 1-0 victory over Rwanda, a 1-1 draw with South Africa, a 2-1 win against Lesotho, and a commanding 4-0 triumph over Benin.
Nevertheless, his recent on-field temperament issues, including a notable clash with teammate Calvin Bassey, have raised concerns. Many observers suggest that the absence of strong competition for the goalkeeper position has contributed to his frustration.
With Okoye’s return, a healthy contest for the starting spot is expected to reignite, providing coach Eric Chelle with more options to rotate and maintain squad harmony.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper is anticipated to vie for a spot in the national squad ahead of Nigeria’s crucial continental playoff against Gabon in Morocco this November.
