Senator Monday Okpeholo, the governor of Edo State, has officially launched a comprehensive drug control committee at both the state and local government levels to strengthen efforts against drug abuse throughout the region.

Governor Okpeholo highlighted this move as a crucial measure in the state’s dedication to eradicating drug trafficking and curbing substance misuse, particularly among young people.

Speaking through his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the governor expressed deep concern over the escalating problem of drug addiction and its detrimental effects on the community.

According to a statement from Mr. Friday Aghedo, Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Governor Okpeholo emphasized that the formation of this committee is in line with the national drug masterplan, marking a proactive approach to safeguarding future generations.

Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), represented by Zonal Commander ACGN Fidelis Cocodia of Zone 13, stressed the importance of grassroots engagement, public education campaigns, and robust support networks as essential pillars in combating drug abuse.

Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, Edo State’s NDLEA Commander, revealed that while the national average for drug use prevalence is 14.4 percent, Edo State’s rate is notably higher at 15 percent.

He warned that Edo is among the states most severely affected by drug-related issues, which have contributed to increased criminal activity and greater susceptibility among the youth.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the state’s Health Commissioner, committed to positioning Edo as a leading example in drug control by focusing on rehabilitation programs, educational outreach for young people, and providing renewed opportunities for those recovering from addiction.

Mrs. Edesili Okpeholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, described drug abuse as a widespread crisis, observing that drug involvement is linked to nearly all criminal acts.

She further emphasized the critical role of women’s compassion and leadership in driving the campaign to eliminate drug abuse from the community.
