‘Osamede’: Director James Omokwe Returns to Cinema After 12 Years

After 12 Years Away, Director James Omokwe Makes a Triumphant Return to Cinema with ‘Osamede

Over a decade ago, James Omokwe made his debut in Nigerian cinema with the supernatural thriller ‘Awakening’. Despite his youthful enthusiasm, the film struggled at the box office due to a limited budget and minimal marketing, ultimately leaving him financially strained and uncertain about his future. Reflecting on that experience, Omokwe admits, “I was inexperienced in distribution strategies.” Yet, the harsh realities of filmmaking left a lasting impression on him.

Today, Omokwe returns with ‘Osamede’, a grand narrative inspired by the 1897 invasion of the Benin Empire, enriched with elements of myth and fantasy. From the moment its first teaser was released, the film positioned itself as a significant cultural milestone, offering audiences a window into Benin’s rich history while marking Omokwe’s personal comeback.

“I’m no longer intimidated by the financial aspects,” Omokwe shares with Nollywire. “I’m confident that Osamede will recoup its investment. That assurance was missing during my initial project.”

James Omokwe’s Journey Toward Cinematic Triumph

Following the setback of ‘Awakening’, Omokwe redirected his talents to television, helming series such as Africa Magic’s ‘Ajoche’ and Showmax’s ‘Diiche’. This period served as both a creative laboratory and a financial safeguard, allowing him to hone his directorial voice. Nevertheless, his passion for cinema remained undiminished.

This passion was reignited through Lilian Olubi, the executive producer who initially brought ‘Osamede’ to life on stage at the Muson Centre and later championed its transition to film. As reported by Nollywire, Olubi was instrumental in securing funding, navigating production challenges-including a harrowing near-kidnapping incident during location scouting-and steadfastly advocating for the story to be told on a cinematic scale.

Although Omokwe initially resisted being labeled as a director of epic tales, such grand narratives found their way to him. With ‘Osamede’, he embraced this identity wholeheartedly. “I see myself as a griot,” he explains, embracing his role as a storyteller of African legends. “These narratives belong to me.”

This sense of ownership influenced every aspect of the film, from casting choices to encouraging naturalistic performances over exaggerated acting, and ensuring the production quality reflected his international aspirations.

The film also highlights diverse talents, with Ivie Okujaye starring prominently against the historical backdrop of the Benin Empire.

The making of ‘Osamede’ was a demanding endeavor. Cast members immersed themselves fully, mastering the Bini language on set, enduring intense battle scenes, and embodying their characters with a dedication that transcended mere acting.

For William Benson, portraying Iyase was particularly meaningful. He has spoken candidly about feeling overlooked in Nollywood for years, and this film represents a pivotal moment in his career.

Omokwe’s dedication verged on obsession. He reveals having viewed the final edit of ‘Osamede’ over 35 times, focusing less on technical corrections and more on emotional resonance. “If a scene doesn’t move me, I know it won’t move the audience,” he says.

‘Osamede’ is already making waves beyond Nigerian borders. After its premiere at Cannes, it has been selected for the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, marking its entry into the global film circuit. What began as a stage production rooted in Edo history has evolved into a universal mythic tale.

What sets ‘Osamede’ apart is not just its ambitious scale but the personal transformation it signifies for Omokwe. This film allows him to emerge from the shadow of his initial failure and establish his presence on the international stage.

“My first film was about proving I could make a movie,” he reflects. “Now, I’m certain of my identity, the story I want to tell, and that the world is ready to hear it.”

James Omokwe boldly reclaims his place in cinema with ‘Osamede’, which will premiere in theaters on October 17, 2025.
