Saleh Aljafarawi, a Palestinian journalist aged 28, lost his life amid violent confrontations in Gaza City, mere days following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
According to Palestinian insiders speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic, Aljafarawi, known for his impactful war coverage videos, was shot by members of an “armed militia” while reporting on the fighting in the Sabra neighborhood.
Footage authenticated by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency, shared by local reporters and activists, shows his body clad in a “press” flak jacket, lying on what seems to be the back of a vehicle. He had been unaccounted for since Sunday morning.
Palestinian sources indicate that the clashes involved Hamas security forces and fighters from the Doghmush family clan in Sabra on Sunday, though this has yet to be officially confirmed by local authorities.
A senior official from Gaza’s Ministry of Interior informed Al Jazeera Arabic that the violence in Gaza City was linked to “an armed militia connected to the [Israeli] occupation.”
The official added that security forces had encircled the militia, and that members of this group had killed displaced civilians returning from southern Gaza to the city.
Despite the ceasefire, local officials continue to caution that Gaza’s security environment remains volatile and precarious.
‘Every moment was filled with fear’
In an interview with Al Jazeera in January, just days before a temporary truce was declared in the ongoing conflict, Aljafarawi recounted his harrowing experience of displacement from northern Gaza.
“The memories of the 467 days I endured will never fade. The hardships we faced are unforgettable,” he reflected.
He also revealed that his journalistic work had made him a target of numerous threats from Israeli forces.
“Honestly, I lived in constant fear, especially after hearing the Israeli occupation’s statements about me. Each second was uncertain, and I never knew what the next moment would bring,” he said.
Since the outbreak of Israel’s war in October 2023, over 270 media professionals have been killed in Gaza, marking it as the deadliest conflict for journalists in recent history.
Aljafarawi’s death occurs as the current ceasefire in Gaza has persisted for three days, with hopes for an imminent hostage-prisoner swap.
U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to convene with global leaders on Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, for a Gaza summit co-hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The summit’s goal is “to conclude the war in the Gaza Strip, bolster peace efforts, and promote a new era of regional security and stability,” according to statements from the Egyptian presidency.
During this landmark meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry announced that a “document to end the Gaza conflict” will be signed. Notably, neither Israel nor Hamas will have direct representation at the talks.
