PDP Allocates 2027 Presidential Candidacy to Southern Nigeria, Confirms Umar Damagum as National Chairman
In a decisive move shaping its strategy for the upcoming 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has designated the southern region of Nigeria as the exclusive zone for its presidential candidate. This resolution emerged from the recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened in Abuja on Monday, where pivotal leadership roles and zoning policies were thoroughly evaluated.
Strategic Zoning and Leadership Consolidation
Alongside the presidential zoning decision, the NEC ratified Umar Damagum as the official National Chairman of the PDP. Damagum, who had been acting in this capacity since March 2023, stepped into the role following a judicial verdict in Benue State that ousted the former chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Prior to his interim appointment, Damagum served as the party’s National Deputy Chairman for the Northern region.
Damagum’s Vision and Acknowledgment of Party Unity
In his acceptance remarks, Damagum conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the party’s leadership and members of the National Working Committee (NWC), emphasizing their unwavering support as instrumental to his leadership. “Initially, I felt our efforts were underappreciated, but this endorsement is a testament not only to me but to the entire NWC team,” he stated.
Reflecting on the party’s journey, Damagum highlighted the resilience demonstrated during challenging periods. “We assumed leadership at a difficult juncture, yet by God’s grace, the PDP remains a cohesive and unified entity,” he remarked.
Positioning for a Strong 2027 Electoral Campaign
With the presidential ticket firmly zoned to the South and the party’s leadership structure solidified, the PDP is strategically aligning itself to present a united front and mount a formidable campaign in the 2027 elections. This approach aims to harness regional strengths and foster inclusivity within the party’s ranks.
