The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has called off its nigeria-education-crisis-unpaid-salaries-strikes/” title=”Unpaid Salaries and …s Threaten to Derail …'s Education Ambitions”>nationwide strike that was sparked by disputes with Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical.
Comrade Festus Osifo, President of PENGASSAN, announced the suspension of the strike in Abuja on Wednesday afternoon, emphasizing that the decision was made out of respect for national institutions and the federal government’s mediation efforts.
While the union remains dissatisfied with certain aspects of the government’s public statement on the issue, it has pledged to halt the industrial action for now. However, PENGASSAN warned that it would promptly reinstate the strike without prior notice if Dangote Refinery violates any agreed terms.
“We remain cautious about Dangote’s commitment to the agreement, but we are willing to trust the government’s intervention for the time being. Any breach will trigger an immediate resumption of our strike,” Osifo stated.
Earlier talks involving the union, Dangote Group, and government officials commenced on Monday but reached an impasse after the refinery’s management refused to reinstate dismissed employees.
Following the Federal Government’s involvement, a breakthrough was achieved in the early hours of Tuesday, leading to a tentative resolution.
The mediation team featured prominent figures such as the National Security Adviser, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Ministers of Labour and Employment, Finance, and senior personnel from the Petroleum Ministry.
Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
