On Thursday evening, a collective of concerned residents in Kano State, led by Barrister Nafisa Abba Isma’il, the chairperson of the Women Lawyers Congress, organized a peaceful demonstration to show their support for the State’s Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
The march commenced at Tukur Road and concluded at the Race Course in Nasarawa GRA, Kano. Participants carried signs voicing their opposition to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s demand for the removal of the Police Commissioner from his position.
During the rally, Barr. Isma’il appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to reject the governor’s petition, labeling it as driven by political motives.
“While governmental neglect allows insecurity to escalate, citizens deserve protection rather than abandonment,” she emphasized. “It is crucial to highlight that since the governor took office, he has consistently overlooked the police-clarify-no-wanted-notice-iyabo-ojo/” title=”… Clarify: No 'Wanted' Notice Issued for Actress Iyabo Ojo”>police force, withholding necessary funding that would enable them to effectively address security issues. This pattern was also evident with previous police commissioners.”
She further stated, “Given the surge in criminal activities in Kano, cooperation between the government and security agencies is essential. Therefore, calling for the dismissal of the Police Commissioner at this critical juncture is ill-advised.”
According to Barr. Isma’il, the Kano Police Command has long been deprived of adequate support and resources, making it unjust to hold the current Police Commissioner solely accountable for security challenges.
“In light of these facts, we earnestly call on the Inspector General of Police to dismiss the politically charged efforts by the Kano State government to oust the Police Commissioner. Instead, we advocate for enhanced collaboration among the police and all relevant stakeholders to maintain and restore peace,” she concluded.
Reports indicate that this demonstration followed Governor Yusuf’s public call for the immediate replacement of CP Bakori. The governor accused the police chief of bias and misconduct after the police withdrew from the Independence Day parade held at Sani Abacha Stadium on Wednesday.
