Kirill Dmitriev envisions a Siberia-Alaska tunnel, potentially constructed with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, to unlock shared resource opportunities.
A senior Kremlin representative has put forward an ambitious plan to construct an underwater tunnel connecting Russia and the United States, highlighting the possibility of collaboration with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company for its development.
Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Kremlin investment envoy, described the proposed 112-kilometer (70-mile) rail and freight corridor between Siberia and Alaska as a gateway to joint exploration and exploitation of natural resources by both nations.
During a White House event with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump expressed intrigue about the concept, calling it “interesting.” When Trump sought Zelenskyy’s opinion, the Ukrainian leader conveyed his disapproval of the idea.
Beyond the tunnel, Dmitriev has also advocated for trilateral cooperation among Russia, China, and the US on Arctic hydrocarbon ventures, emphasizing expanded oil drilling initiatives in the region.
“Russia is actively considering collaborative projects with China and the United States, particularly in Arctic energy development,” Dmitriev stated last month, as reported by TASS news agency.
With the Arctic ice melting due to climate change, Russia and other nations bordering the Arctic are preparing to intensify mining and resource extraction activities.

“Let’s create the future together,” Dmitriev urged Musk, envisioning a connection that would link the Americas with Afro-Eurasia through what he dubbed the “Putin-Trump Tunnel.”
As of Friday evening (US time), Musk had not publicly replied to the invitation.
Dmitriev’s promotion of the tunnel coincided with a lengthy phone conversation between Trump and Vladimir Putin, held ahead of their anticipated meeting in Budapest, Hungary, which Trump indicated would occur within two weeks. The Kremlin has confirmed this upcoming summit.
The Bering Strait, at its narrowest point measuring 82 kilometers (51 miles), separates Russia’s remote Chukotka region from Alaska. The idea of physically linking these two landmasses has been contemplated for over a century and a half.
Situated in the middle of the strait are the Diomede Islands-one Russian, the other American-just 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) apart.
Dmitriev referenced a Cold War-era proposal for a “Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge” spanning the strait, sharing archival sketches illustrating the envisioned route alongside a modern graphic outlining the potential tunnel path.
“Now is the moment to advance this vision and connect continents for the first time in human history,” Dmitriev declared.
