Queen Mercy Challenges Pastor Kingsley’s Controversial Claim That Men Aren’t Obliged to Support Women

The question of whether men are obligated to financially support their partners or if such provision is merely a voluntary act has sparked ongoing discussion.
Recently, Pastor Kingsley, the founder of David’s Christian Centre, shared his views during a sermon, suggesting that the societal expectation for men to be the primary breadwinners is more a product of cultural norms than a divine or biological requirement.
He emphasized that women should not depend solely on men for financial sustenance.
This stance, however, was met with a thoughtful rebuttal from Mercy, who respectfully disagreed by citing scripture. While she expressed admiration for Pastor Kingsley’s ministry, she clarified her differing opinion on this matter.
Mercy stated:
“Dear Pastor Kingsley, I deeply value your ministry and frequently benefit from your teachings on marriage. Nonetheless, I must respectfully oppose your viewpoint here. Scripture clearly identifies the man as the head of the wife (Ephesians 5:23, 1 Corinthians 11:3), and the woman as his helper (Genesis 2:18).”
“A helper’s role is to support, not to bear the entire load. She assists when challenges arise but is not meant to carry all household responsibilities alone. This interpretation seems straightforward to me. Your message might unintentionally encourage men to feel less responsible for provision, while women are increasingly expected to fill that role.”
“In reality, many women already serve as providers. Although your intention may not be to promote this shift, such messages can inadvertently reinforce it. It’s crucial to consider how these narratives influence behavior, as they might lead some men to neglect their God-ordained duties. With all due respect and love.”

Here are some reactions from social media:
@dovies_naturals: “Men just want to be pampered, that’s the truth.”
@real_qcweenbee: “When people talk about men providing, they mean husbands, not casual relationships! Genesis teaches that men must work the land to feed the family, while women endure childbirth. Culture supports this too. I don’t know any husband who doesn’t want to provide.”
@ultimatecakesncatering: “A man providing doesn’t mean a woman should be a burden and avoid contributing to the household.”
@tastyboxng: “Pastor Kingsley’s advice is actually in women’s best interest. Women should have their own income, no matter how small. Relying solely on a man’s earnings can lead to disrespect, frustration, and resentment over time.”
@king_mezzzz: “Isn’t this the same group fighting for equality? Now you want to impose this on men. Pick your battles, ladies.”
@oluwabegod_melody: “(Ephesians 5:24) Just as the church submits to Christ, wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”
@iam_2simple: “Traditional men should marry traditional women; equal partners should find equal partners. Personally, I will fully provide and pay my wife a monthly salary.”
@gusterborg: “You’re preaching like a single person who thinks they know it all. Do you understand what ‘helper’ means? The pastor simply meant women shouldn’t be dependent on their husbands. How can you help if you rely solely on him?”
@kingsaffairs.ng: “Some men want submissive providers!”
@funmi_ilashe_beach: “He’s a pastor, but not everything he says is 100% accurate. Accept that and find peace.”
@real_qcweenbee: “Mostly, it’s single people who argue about this. Married couples manage their homes in ways that work best for them!”
