The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) recently hosted an inter-school quiz contest aimed at secondary school students across Bauchi State.

Prior to the launch of the 2025 national debate themed around legislature, democracy, and governance, NILDS Director-General, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, emphasized that the initiative seeks to deepen students’ understanding of legislative processes and democratic principles.

He highlighted that the competition is designed to motivate young Nigerians to develop a keen interest in legislative affairs and governance participation.

Prof. Sulaiman further noted that equipping youth with knowledge about the legislature not only promotes a more inclusive and participatory governance system but also encourages active citizen involvement in legislative matters.

Representing him, NILDS Coordinator Dr. Hadiza Sa’idu revealed that this quiz will be conducted across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“This marks the 10th edition of the quiz and the fourth occasion it is being held at the national level,” she stated.

“As we officially open the 2025 NILDS National Quiz Competition, I urge all participants and their educators to adhere strictly to the competition guidelines to ensure the event’s goals are fully realized,” she added.

Bauchi State’s Commissioner for Education, Dr. Muhammed Lawal, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a valuable platform for assessing and enhancing student performance within the state’s educational system.

“This competition offers a unique opportunity to benchmark our schools’ teaching quality and inspire students to excel,” he remarked.

“I encourage all participants to view this as a win-win experience-whether or not they secure top positions, their dedication and effort are commendable and will be rewarded,” Dr. Lawal said.

He also expressed hope that the event would receive extensive media coverage to motivate other schools to engage and elevate their performance in future editions.

At the conclusion of the state-level contest, Mr. Nasiru Alah, Chairman of the Bauchi State House of Assembly’s Education Committee, announced the winners: Government Day Secondary School, Bulkachuwa, claimed first place; Government Secondary School, Gamawa, secured second place; and Government Girls Day Secondary School, Dagaud, finished third.

Additional participants included Fariah Foundation School, Government Secondary School Ningi, and Government Day Secondary School, Rimin-Zayam.
