Both the federal government and Lagos State have jointly affirmed a strict stance against malaria, committing to a zero-tolerance policy toward the disease.

This commitment was announced during the mid-term evaluation of the Impact Project, which outlines the strategic plan for malaria eradication within Lagos State.

During the event, Health Minister Professor Muhammad Ali Pate praised Lagos State’s leadership and persistent efforts in combating malaria.

“I applaud Lagos State for spearheading this initiative and demonstrating relentless commitment to malaria control. Their approach exemplifies how determination and innovative strategies can conquer even the most daunting health challenges,” the minister remarked.

He further acknowledged the vital role played by both national and international collaborators and reiterated the Federal Ministry of Health’s ongoing support through the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP).

Minister Pate highlighted notable milestones achieved through this partnership, such as the successful integration of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) and community pharmacies into a regulated, digitized framework for malaria service delivery.

He emphasized that the adoption of digital tools has greatly enhanced the processes of data gathering, analysis, and reporting. This advancement allows for more accurate monitoring of progress, identification of service deficiencies, and informed decision-making to optimize malaria control efforts.

In his keynote speech, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated the state’s dedication to shifting from a high malaria prevalence to a pre-elimination phase, with the ultimate goal of achieving a malaria-free Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the state is harnessing evidence-based strategies, technological innovations, and collaborative partnerships to accelerate progress.

He underscored the critical need to continuously assess field data to ensure the effective deployment of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and accurate reporting from private pharmacies and PPMVs.

“Our focus remains on accountability, scalability, quality assurance, and fostering community ownership,” the governor stated.

He also highlighted that combating malaria requires more than clinical interventions alone, urging households and communities to actively participate in prevention efforts.

“Malaria control cannot rely solely on healthcare facilities. It demands that families and communities eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, seek timely testing, and place confidence in the health system,” he emphasized.

Governor Sanwo-Olu added that Lagos’ approach prioritizes effective communication, a strong network of community health workers, and collaboration with traditional leaders, market associations, and educational institutions.

“Embedding the principles of prevention and testing into everyday life across Lagos is essential,” he concluded.
