SASSA Unveils October Payment Dates: What You Need to Know!

0

With October just around the corner, millions of South Africans will once again rely on digital platforms to access their South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant payments. As the new payment schedule takes effect next month, it is vital for beneficiaries-particularly the elderly and those living in remote regions-to familiarize themselves with the digital resources available for checking balances, updating banking information, and monitoring grant payments.
SASSA disburses grants on designated dates to streamline the payment process. For October 2025, the timetable is as follows:

  • Older Persons Grant: October 2, 2025
  • Disability Grant: October 3, 2025
  • Children’s and Other Grants: October 6, 2025

The October 6th date includes essential grants such as child support, foster care, and care dependency grants. SASSA emphasizes that funds remain accessible beyond these official dates, so beneficiaries need not rush to withdraw on the exact day.

Updating Your Banking Details for SASSA Grants

As of September 30, 2025, Postbank’s contract with SASSA will conclude. This change has been officially communicated to Parliament, with assurances that grant payments will continue uninterrupted for all recipients. While active SASSA cards will still function at ATMs, beneficiaries are encouraged to transition to personal bank accounts or alternative payment options, as Postbank support will be phased out. It is important to update your banking information through secure, official channels, which are outlined below.

Online Banking Detail Updates (SRD and General Grants)

Beneficiaries receiving the SRD grant or general grants such as Old Age, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, and Care Dependency can conveniently update their banking details online via SASSA’s official portal.

  • Visit the official SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za
  • Choose the “change my banking details” option
  • Input your South African ID number along with your registered mobile phone number
  • You will receive an SMS containing a secure link; use this to enter your new bank details (bank name, account number, branch code, and account type) and verify with a one-time password (OTP)
  • Submit the information and await confirmation; subsequent grant payments will be deposited into your updated account

In-Person Banking Detail Changes (All Grant Types)

For all grant categories-including those not supported by the online system or requiring special documentation-beneficiaries can update their banking details in person at any SASSA office. This option is especially useful for niche grants such as Grant-in-Aid and War Veterans Grant, or in cases where online access or identity verification is problematic.

  • Visit your closest SASSA office
  • Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (such as a stamped bank statement or official letter from the bank), and complete the SASSA banking detail change form
  • Fill out the form on-site, attach the necessary documents, and submit them to a SASSA official
  • Your request will be processed, and you will receive confirmation; future payments will be directed to your new account

Typically, verification of banking details takes between 4 and 10 working days, with changes applying only to payments made after confirmation.

Ways to Check Your SASSA Grant Balance

Beneficiaries have multiple options to verify their SASSA grant balances, especially important as Postbank’s payment partnership ends. The most dependable methods include:

USSD Codes via Mobile Phone

  • Dial 1203210# or 12069277# from the mobile number registered with SASSA and follow the prompts to view your balance. This service works on any basic phone and does not require airtime or data.

SASSA Online Portal

  • Access srd.sassa.gov.za or the official SASSA website, log in with your grant details, and instantly check your balance if you have internet connectivity.

WhatsApp Assistance

  • Save SASSA’s WhatsApp number (082 046 8553). Send the word “SASSA” followed by “STATUS” to receive guided prompts, culminating in your current balance information.

ATM and Retail Store Inquiries

  • If you have transitioned to a bank account or retailer-issued card (such as those from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, or Checkers), you can check your balance at any ATM or request assistance from cashiers at participating stores.

Personal Visits to SASSA Offices

  • For direct support, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and grant card to receive personalized assistance in checking your balance.
