On Wednesday, the Senate officially approved the appointment of Mr. Louis Odion as the Executive Commissioner (Operations) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Odion previously served as Senior Technical Assistant on Media to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

In addition, Hajia Ummusalma Isyaka Rabiu was confirmed as the Executive Commissioner (Corporate Services) of the FCCPC.

This confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment, led by Senator Umar Sadiq, reviewed and endorsed their nominations.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier submitted both candidates’ names to the Senate for vetting and approval.

With a background as a seasoned journalist and former Edo State Commissioner for Information, Odion will be responsible for managing the commission’s operational activities. Meanwhile, Ummusalma Isyaka Rabiu, hailing from Kano State, will oversee corporate services within the commission.

During the presentation of the committee’s findings, Senator Sadiq emphasized that the nominees exhibited strong qualifications, integrity, and a deep understanding of consumer rights and market regulation.

He further highlighted that their appointments support the government’s commitment to fostering fair competition and safeguarding consumer interests amid Nigeria’s expanding digital economy and commercial landscape.

The Senate unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations and confirmed both individuals through a voice vote.

Separately, the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, submitted its report on the screening of Professor Yusuf Mohammad for the role of Commissioner at the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC), representing the North-East region.

Senator Adegbonmire affirmed that Professor Mohammad fulfilled all constitutional criteria and brought valuable expertise essential for advancing legal reforms in Nigeria.

He remarked, “Professor Yusuf Mohammad is highly qualified and possesses unquestionable integrity. His appointment will enhance the NLRC’s ability to update obsolete laws and align them with contemporary societal needs.”

Following a motion for confirmation, the Senate approved Professor Mohammad’s nomination without any opposition.
