On Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially inducted two newly elected Senators to fill the previously vacant seats representing Edo Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts in the National Assembly.
Joseph Ikpea from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) took their oaths of office at approximately 11:51 a.m. on the Senate floor.
The oath-taking ceremony was overseen by Emmanuel Odo, the Acting Clerk of the Senate.
Ikpea secured his position through the recent by-election in Edo Central, while Nwachukwu emerged victorious in the Anambra South senatorial race.
These vacancies arose after Monday Okpebholo resigned from the Edo Central seat to pursue the governorship of the state, and following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South.
Addressing the new Senators, Akpabio emphasized the gravity of their responsibilities, urging them to transcend party affiliations in their service to the nation.
“Your election marks a significant national responsibility,” he remarked. “You now represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not just your political parties.”
He further pledged the unwavering support of the Senate members to help the newcomers acclimate to their legislative duties.
“Veteran Senators will guide you through the intricacies of lawmaking,” Akpabio assured. “Congratulations and a warm welcome to the chamber.”
Following the induction, the Senate proceeded with its legislative agenda, with the new Senators taking their assigned seats in the chamber.
