After his title=”Lagos Mourns the Loss of Another Influential Female Council Official”>recent loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final, Jannik Sinner bounces back by securing his third championship of the year in Beijing.

Jannik Sinner claimed the 21st title of his professional journey by decisively defeating American rising star Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the China Open.

The Italian champion celebrated his second triumph on Beijing’s hard courts, having first won the event during his debut appearance in 2023, and now sets his sights on reclaiming the world number one spot.

Throughout his matches on Beijing’s Diamond Court, Sinner’s sole defeat came at the hands of his fierce competitor and current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, who secured last year’s title after a thrilling three-set battle.

“This venue holds a very special place in my heart,” expressed Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam winner and the tournament’s top seed this week.

Alcaraz opted not to defend his crown in Beijing, instead clinching the Japan Open title in Tokyo just days earlier.

From the outset, Sinner dominated by breaking Tien’s serve early in the first set, setting the tone for a commanding performance against the 19-year-old making his ATP final debut.

“Congratulations to Jannik on an outstanding week and another well-deserved title. It was an honor to compete against you today,” Tien remarked to the world number two after the match.

Although Tien briefly threatened to break serve in the second set’s second game, Sinner swiftly regained control, concluding the one-sided final with an impressive tally of 10 aces over 72 minutes.

Sinner targets world number one ranking

Had he triumphed, Tien would have become the lowest-ranked player ever to win the Beijing tournament.

At just 19 years and nine months, he also would have been the second-youngest American to claim a Tour title since Andy Roddick’s 2002 victory.

Despite glimpses of his considerable talent, Tien was unable to sustain a challenge against the more experienced Sinner.

“You’ve demonstrated throughout the season what an exceptional talent you are,” Sinner acknowledged after the match.

This victory marks Sinner’s third championship of the year, adding to his Australian Open and Wimbledon titles.

With Alcaraz withdrawing from the Shanghai Masters due to injury on Tuesday, Sinner now has a promising opportunity to regain the top ranking before the season concludes.

The Spanish star had overtaken Sinner for the number one spot after defeating him in the US Open final on September 7.

As the Shanghai Masters commenced this week, Sinner enters as the tournament’s top seed.
