In one week’s time, Nigeria is set to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on their home turf…
Hugo Broos, the head coach of South Africa’s national football team, has disclosed that his focus is not yet on the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, according to Soccernet.ng.
Currently leading Group D by six points, the AFCON 2023 bronze medalists hold a comfortable advantage over Eric Chelle’s Nigerian squad, with the two teams scheduled to clash next Tuesday.
Their previous encounter in June 2024 ended in a 1-1 stalemate, back when Nigeria was managed by Finidi George.
Broos Prioritizes Upcoming Matches Over Nigeria Clash
Before hosting Nigeria at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein next week, South Africa will face Lesotho in three days. Coach Broos has emphasized the critical nature of all forthcoming fixtures, yet he remains composed despite Nigeria’s impressive lineup.
“The match against Nigeria is still a week away, and right now, my attention is solely on Lesotho,” Broos stated during a press briefing at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, as reported by TimesLive ZA.
“After we conclude the Lesotho game, we will assess our strategy and lineup for Nigeria. At this moment, Lesotho is the priority because it’s the most crucial challenge ahead.”
“Securing a win against Lesotho is vital; failure to do so could complicate our path forward,” Broos added.
“Following that, we have important fixtures against Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Rwanda. Dropping points now would increase pressure in the upcoming October matches.”
“Therefore, our immediate goal is to triumph on Friday and then build momentum heading into the Nigeria game,” the Belgian coach concluded.
Meanwhile, Eric Chelle’s Nigerian squad has already commenced preparations for their upcoming fixture against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Among the first to arrive at the training camp on Monday were Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu, Nantes’ Chidozie Awaziem, and Boavista’s Bruno Onyemaechi, joined by promising talents like teenager Benjamin Frederick and goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye. So far, 15 Super Eagles players have reported for camp.
