Oludipe, widely recognized by his stage name Spyro, has openly stated that his most significant obstacle in the music scene stems from fellow Christians rather than Muslims.
During a candid conversation with Frank Edoho, Spyro expressed his surprise, saying, “The toughest opposition I’ve encountered in this industry has come from Christians, not Muslims. I entered this space thinking we were united, like family. But soon, I was criticized for wearing earrings and other personal choices.”
He further emphasized the importance of outreach beyond the church walls, noting, “How can we impact those outside if we isolate ourselves? The scripture commands us to ‘go into the world,’ not to remain confined within the church.”
Spyro revealed that his statements were often misinterpreted to paint him in a negative light, sharing, “Whenever I mention Jesus openly, it stirs controversy. Some Christians have even threatened to sabotage my career because of this.”
Reflecting on the backlash, he observed, “Anyone who boldly proclaims Jesus seems to face resistance. It made me realize there’s something powerful about this faith. For instance, if someone declares they follow Buddhism, it rarely causes a stir. But mention Christ, and suddenly there’s conflict. That’s when I understood I was committed for the long haul, despite threats of cancellation or backlash.”
He confidently stated, “My presence here isn’t by chance but by divine purpose. God brought me here and will sustain me. The Bible assures us of prosperity and grace, saying the earth and all within it belong to the Lord. If that’s true, then I deserve to thrive.”
Spyro also advocates for what he calls “lifestyle evangelism,” explaining, “Preaching Christ from a luxury car like a G-Wagon or a Lamborghini sends a strong message. It’s not about wealth alone, but showing that success and faith can coexist. I’ve drawn many to Christ by embodying this.”
Addressing the blurred lines between gospel and secular music, he shared, “I don’t struggle with balancing my identity as an Afro-pop and R&B artist with my Christian faith. They are distinct aspects of who I am. While I’m a believer, my role as a singer allows me to reach people in different ways. Not everyone is meant to preach from a pulpit; sometimes, you meet people where they are.”
Spyro offered a historical perspective on Christianity’s evolution, stating, “Modern Christianity is influenced by figures like Joseph of Arimathea, a political figure who secured Jesus’ burial. This shows how faith and power have intertwined over time. Jesus’ resurrection fulfilled prophecy, but today, we need dedicated advocates in every field.”
He concluded with a call to action, “Many Christians shy away from engaging in sectors like finance or entertainment, leaving them vulnerable to negative influences like drug abuse and moral decline. If we don’t step in to make a difference, others will fill the void. It’s time for believers to be active and visible in all areas of society.”
