Ahead of the pivotal ninth matchday clash between Nigeria and Lesotho, former Super Eagles skipper John Mikel Obi has expressed strong optimism that the national team remains capable of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to take on Lesotho’s Crocodiles at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane this Friday. Following that fixture, Eric Chelle’s squad will wrap up their qualification campaign with a home encounter against Benin Republic’s Cheetahs next Tuesday in Uyo.
At present, Nigeria occupies third place in Group C with 11 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa by three points each. Despite this uphill battle, Mikel has called on the team to show unwavering determination on the field and secure victories in both remaining matches to keep their World Cup ambitions alive.
“The players must give their all to earn positive outcomes in these final two games,” Mikel declared during an appearance on the ObiOne Podcast. “Failing to qualify for the World Cup again would be a huge disappointment-something unacceptable for a nation that cherishes football so deeply. The fate of our World Cup journey lies squarely with the players. They have to win these matches-no ifs or buts.”
He also highlighted the importance of focusing solely on football, urging the squad to put aside any distractions. “At this critical juncture, all off-field distractions must be set aside. It’s down to the players now,” he stressed. “They need to step up, take ownership, and deliver results. The hopes of millions of Nigerians rest on their shoulders.”
As the Super Eagles gear up for what could be a defining chapter in their World Cup quest, the spotlight is firmly on the team to rise to the occasion and clinch their place on the world’s biggest football stage.
