Throughout the summer transfer period, Joe Aribo attracted interest from multiple clubs, yet he ultimately chose to remain with Southampton.
Southampton’s head coach, Will Still, has disclosed that the Nigerian international midfielder Joe Aribo has yet to feature this season, attributing this to the intense competition within the squad, according to Soccernet.ng.
Following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League last season, speculation mounted regarding Aribo’s future at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Amid uncertainty about his next move, Aribo was notably absent from Southampton’s pre-season preparations. Despite reported links to teams such as Besiktas and Rangers, no transfer materialized, compelling him to stay with the Saints.
Despite the Championship season being underway, Aribo has yet to make an appearance or even be named in the matchday squad for Southampton.
This absence has sparked curiosity, especially considering Aribo’s pivotal role in Southampton’s recent campaign to return to the Premier League.
Will Still Addresses Joe Aribo’s Playing Time
When questioned about Aribo’s current status, Southampton’s coach Will Still explained that the midfielder’s limited involvement is largely due to missing nearly the entire pre-season.
“Our squad consists of around 24 or 25 players, including three goalkeepers, and each week we have to omit six players from the lineup, which is quite significant. Aribo missed almost the whole pre-season,” Still shared with the Daily Echo.
“We are gradually reintegrating him when the timing feels appropriate, but we must weigh all factors carefully.”
Still also highlighted the fierce competition for midfield roles within the team but reassured that Aribo will receive chances to prove himself.
“There are numerous players vying for those midfield spots, and truthfully, the hardest part of my job is having to leave players out and inform them they won’t be involved,” Still admitted.
“Sometimes, there isn’t a clear reason; it’s just a decision I must make. Players need to be patient and understand the situation.”
“I prefer to be upfront and transparent about it. Given our current results and performances, every upcoming match presents an opportunity for different players. If others seize their chance, then that’s how it goes.”
Considering Aribo’s talent and previous contributions, it is expected that he will reclaim a starting role at Southampton in the near future.
Should this not occur, his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, allowing him to explore options with other clubs.
