Blue Pictures Entertainment is set to premiere the film Dara in theaters on September 5, 2025. Directed by Bobby Rak and executive produced by Mfon Essiet, this compelling drama delves into the issues of cultism and violence prevalent on Nigerian university campuses, unfolding against the vibrant backdrop of Port Harcourt.
During the film’s debut interviews, the cast and crew highlighted Dara as both a powerful social critique and an authentic depiction of Port Harcourt’s unique cultural landscape. Emmanuel Edi, one of the lead actors, shared how his own campus experiences deeply influenced his portrayal:
“Back in school, I often felt threatened. On campus, especially when you stand out, there’s pressure to join these groups,” he revealed. “This film goes beyond entertainment; it’s a call to action against cultism.”
Raymond Umenze, who embodies the character Agama, reflected on the emotional depth the role demanded: “Every feeling has its place. For me, channeling anger was enlightening because it uncovers profound truths.”
Riyo David viewed the narrative through the lens of loyalty and camaraderie. “My role symbolizes genuine friendship. In today’s world, such steadfastness is rare, so I’m proud to bring a character to life who truly stands by his principles.”
Hailing from Port Harcourt himself, director Bobby Rak, who initially made his mark as a fight choreographer in Nollywood, emphasized the film’s roots in real-life experiences from the city. “Our storytelling is deeply inspired by what we’ve witnessed in Port Harcourt. Ultimately, filmmaking should educate, entertain, and enlighten audiences.”
Executive producer Mfon Essiet stressed the importance of showcasing Port Harcourt’s distinct identity rather than defaulting to the more commonly portrayed Lagos setting.
“Port Harcourt boasts its own vibrant subculture. While it’s undeniably Nigerian, it carries nuances that outsiders often overlook. It was crucial for those who grew up there and cherish its culture to narrate their own story authentically.”
The ensemble cast features Tomi Ojo, Raymond Umenze, Emmanuel Edi, Tina Mba, Riyo David, Eke Ella, Prince Ren, Barbiey Udoh, Abobbi Eddieroll, and Nkemjika Paul.
