NAFDAC Shuts Down Unauthorized Herbal Medicine Operation in Kaduna
On Friday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) took decisive action by closing an unlicensed herbal medicine manufacturing site in Kaduna State.
Location and Background of the Facility
The establishment, operating under the name SHIFA’UNNUR, was situated in Mararaba Jos within the Igabi Local Government Area. This facility was found to be functioning without the necessary regulatory approvals.
Regulatory Intervention and Findings
Leading the enforcement team, NAFDAC’s Principal Regulatory Officer, Mr. Shamsuddeen Mani, explained that the closure was prompted by the facility’s failure to comply with essential operational standards. He emphasized that the site was not registered with the agency, a violation that compromises public health safety.
“Our intervention was based on reliable intelligence reports,” Mani stated. “The equipment used was subpar and the environment unsanitary, raising significant concerns about the safety, quality, and effectiveness of the herbal products being produced.”
Seizure and Future Actions
During the raid, NAFDAC confiscated herbal products valued at approximately N5 million. These items are slated for destruction to prevent any potential health hazards. The facility remains sealed as investigations continue to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements.
Context and Importance of Regulation
Illegal herbal medicine production poses a growing threat in Nigeria, with unregulated products often linked to adverse health effects. According to recent data, NAFDAC has intensified efforts nationwide, shutting down over 50 unauthorized herbal operations in the past year alone. This crackdown aligns with the agency’s commitment to safeguarding consumers from counterfeit and unsafe medicinal products.
