Chaos erupted in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, on Tuesday when a group of unruly individuals launched an attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) State Secretariat, causing extensive damage to the party’s assets.
The assault took place as the ADC was gearing up to officially inaugurate its state executive members.
Reports indicate that the assailants, believed to be politically motivated thugs, arrived in large numbers at the ADC Secretariat situated in the Basiri district of Ado-Ekiti. They proceeded to vandalize everything within reach, including chairs, tables, canopies, musical equipment, and even a motorcycle.
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the National Secretary of the ADC, condemned the attack in strong terms, labeling it an adc-tinubu/” title=”… Warns Tinubu: Your Presidency May Last Only One Term”>undemocratic and deplorable act.
The former Osun State governor expressed deep regret and shame that individuals emerging from a democratic environment could engage in such reprehensible behavior under the guise of political rivalry.
It was further revealed that the attackers had initially set fire to part of the party’s secretariat and canopies late at night. They returned during the day to wreak havoc again, destroying additional chairs arranged for the inauguration ceremony just as the event was about to commence.
Valuable properties worth millions of naira were damaged, and gunfire was reportedly heard as party members fled to safety.
The ex-Minister of Interior voiced his profound disappointment over the incident and urged security agencies to take swift action to safeguard lives and property, restoring peace in the state.
Aregbesola also described the violence as a disturbing regression into intolerance, stating, “Witnessing such undemocratic behavior undermining the democratic process is a grave setback to our societal values.”
He emphasized that democracy thrives on the freedom to associate and participate openly in democratic activities such as meetings, rallies, and campaigns.
When reached for comment, SP Abutu, the Police Public Relations Officer for Ekiti State, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police has initiated an investigation aimed at apprehending those responsible for the attack.
