The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) national leadership has officially launched the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to spearhead the forthcoming SWAN @60 Diamond Jubilee Celebration. This milestone event heralds the beginning of festivities commemorating sixty years of outstanding contributions to sports journalism in Nigeria.
The formal inauguration ceremony was held yesterday at SWAN’s national secretariat in Abuja. During the event, SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin emphasized the critical role the LOC will play, urging members to approach their responsibilities with unwavering commitment and teamwork.
He highlighted that the success of the Diamond Jubilee largely depends on the LOC’s effective execution of its duties, assuring them of full logistical and operational support from the national secretariat.
“The responsibility resting on the LOC for this Diamond Jubilee is immense. The National Secretariat is committed to providing all necessary resources, including transportation and logistical assistance, to facilitate your tasks. Your appointment reflects your proven expertise and ability to deliver results.
Your dedication will not only be acknowledged but will also leave a lasting legacy,” Mr. Benjamin affirmed.
Furthermore, he revealed that the Secretariat, in collaboration with the Main Organising Committee (MOC), has already commenced engagement with key stakeholders and initiated courtesy visits, encouraging the LOC to promptly begin its activities.
In his acceptance remarks, LOC Chairman Mr. Ben Ogbemudia, Sports and Politics Editor at the New National Star, expressed sincere appreciation for the confidence placed in the committee. He vowed to lead with full dedication to ensure the 60th anniversary is celebrated memorably.
“The expertise within this committee inspires confidence; even if I stumble, the team will propel us forward. We recognize the significance of this responsibility-any shortfall would be a setback for Nigerians, the sports community, and ourselves. With God’s grace, we are determined to succeed,” he declared.
The LOC comprises notable figures such as broadcaster Ms. Anietie Patrick serving as Secretary, alongside members including On Air Personality Sylvanus Ofekun, Arise News assistant news director Ferdinand Duruoha, seasoned sports journalist Niyi Busari, and media strategist Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, among others.
In addition, SWAN has invoked Article 19 of its constitution to form a Special Awards Committee, chaired by veteran sports writer and former SWAN Secretary in Kano State, Mr. Abdulgafar Oladimeji. This seven-member panel, with former SWAN Vice President Ms. Chigozie Chukwuleta as Secretary, is charged with selecting deserving honorees for the 60th anniversary awards.
The SWAN @60 Diamond Jubilee is designed to celebrate the Association’s rich heritage, pay tribute to its pioneers, and chart a visionary path forward. The commemorative two-day event is slated for October 30 and 31, 2025, in Abuja.
