Over a decade ago, tattoo artist Brian Finn chose to dedicate his skills toward a compassionate mission: offering free or discounted tattoos on his days off to individuals bearing scars from traumatic experiences.
“One day, it just struck me that I had the ability to make a difference with what I do. So, I decided to pursue it,” Finn reflects.

NPR first connected with Finn in 2015, shortly after he began dedicating his personal time to tattooing clients seeking to mask their scars.
Following that initial feature, Finn saw a surge in requests. To date, he has inked thousands of individuals wishing to transform scars linked to domestic violence, trafficking, self-harm, and other hardships. With over 30 years of experience, Finn understands that tattoos hold unique significance for each person.
“Some clients want their tattoos to completely hide the scars, while others prefer to emphasize them,” he explains. “Everyone’s journey is different, and both approaches are valid depending on what the person wants.”

Since the 2015 interview, Finn notes that the influx of inquiries has extended beyond clients alone.
He now mentors fellow tattoo artists interested in offering similar compassionate services. A global network of tattoo professionals has emerged, inspired by his example. “Artists from all over the world have reached out, saying, ‘I heard your story and I want to do the same,'” Finn shares.
Despite the rewarding nature of his work, Finn admits the emotional weight was initially unexpected.
“Listening to so many painful stories every day was tough,” he recalls. “Over time, it’s become more manageable, but it was overwhelming at first.”

Looking ahead, Finn remains committed to his mission.
“I don’t see any reason to stop,” he affirms. “Helping people in this way feels meaningful.”
