The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed its commitment to producing a timely and people-centered constitution that truly embodies the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians.
In a statement to the press in Abuja on Monday, Hon. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, praised Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for his insightful leadership, inclusivity, and visionary approach. He described Kalu as an “exceptional reformer” whose guidance has instilled confidence within the Constitution Review Committee.
Representing the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State and serving as the committee’s spokesperson, Agbese highlighted the committee’s dedication and collaborative spirit as key drivers of its progress.
“Our members approach this task with deep patriotism and a clear understanding of the immense responsibility entrusted to us by Nigerians. The level of engagement from legislators, experts, civil society groups, diplomatic representatives, political parties, and citizens has been truly remarkable,” he stated.
Agbese revealed that the committee has received an extensive array of memoranda from diverse stakeholders, including state governments, traditional authorities, professional associations, and civil society organizations. These submissions have addressed critical topics such as decentralization of authority, reserved parliamentary seats for women, establishment of state police forces, gender parity, and electoral reforms.
He further explained that the committee’s public hearings-conducted at state, zonal, and national levels-alongside technical sessions, were meticulously designed to ensure openness, inclusiveness, and comprehensive participation from Nigerians nationwide.
Assuring the public of continued diligence, Agbese stated that the committee is poised to maintain its momentum and produce a thorough report that will endure the test of time. The forthcoming phase will concentrate on consolidating the various legislative proposals into a harmonized final document to be presented to the House for approval.
“Our mission is to deliver a constitution that genuinely serves the Nigerian people-a framework that enhances democratic governance, fosters fairness, and reinforces national cohesion,” Agbese emphasized.
He also lauded Speaker Abbas for his unwavering institutional support and highlighted the effective collaboration between the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly as a significant factor in the committee’s achievements.
“Given the exemplary leadership and commitment demonstrated, Nigerians can be optimistic that this constitution review will break from past patterns and result in a lasting legacy,” Agbese concluded.
As part of its ongoing engagement efforts, the Constitution Review Committee convened a national public hearing in Abuja on September 22 to gather input from Nigerians and key stakeholders. Additionally, a session with political parties was scheduled for Monday, October 6, 2025.
