Tinubu Gives Marching Order On Further Crash Of Food Prices

Tinubu Issues Bold Directive to Drive Food Prices Even Lower

President Bola Tinubu has directed a specialized committee within the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to intensify efforts aimed at lowering food prices nationwide.

This information was shared by Senator Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, during a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists covering the Senate in Abuja on Wednesday.

Senator Abdullahi highlighted that the strategy to reduce food costs hinges on guaranteeing the secure and efficient transportation of agricultural products across the country’s various transit routes.

He emphasized that this directive to curb food prices and ensure the safe movement of farm produce is a key component of President Tinubu’s broader goal of achieving food sovereignty.

“To tackle the high expenses associated with transporting farm goods, I can confirm that the President has issued clear instructions. A committee under the Federal Executive Council is actively working to facilitate the safe and smooth passage of agricultural commodities along our transport corridors,” the Minister stated.

“It is common knowledge, especially among you in the media, that agricultural products pass through multiple routes before reaching consumers. The cumulative transportation costs significantly contribute to the elevated prices at the point of sale.

“We are dedicating considerable effort to resolving this challenge. I’ve shared this brief insight because it’s crucial for you to be informed,” he added.

Regarding the concept of food sovereignty, Senator Abdullahi explained that it encompasses a comprehensive approach to food security, focusing on consistent availability, affordability, accessibility, and nutritional adequacy of food supplies.

He also mentioned upcoming initiatives such as the Farmer Soil Health Scheme and reforms in cooperative societies, which are slated for implementation.

“The Farmer Soil Health Scheme is finalized and ready for launch; we are currently finalizing the announcement of its commencement date.

“Additionally, revitalizing cooperative reforms is a priority. President Tinubu recognizes cooperatives as vital instruments for mobilizing resources, stimulating economic activities, and enhancing members’ livelihoods.

“Cooperatives operate on democratic principles while driving productivity. We are undertaking significant reforms in this sector, and I encourage members of the press to consider establishing cooperatives themselves,” the Minister concluded.
