President Bola Tinubu, alongside the Nigerian Senate, has extended profound sympathies to Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro and his family following the heartbreaking loss of his son, Victor Moro, and grandson, Abba Moro Jr.
Through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his deep sorrow to the senator’s loved ones and associates. Senator Moro represents the Benue South Senatorial District, Zone C, in the National Assembly.
The President encouraged the family to draw comfort from the meaningful and positive impact the children had during their brief lives, emphasizing that their presence was a blessing to all who knew them.
On Tuesday, the Senate was engulfed in mourning as members observed a moment of silence to honor the two young family members of Minority Leader Abba Moro, who passed away within just two days of each other.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, visibly moved, presided over the session and shared the tragic news of Senator Moro’s loss. He recounted that the senator’s 28-year-old son, a recent university graduate, died in a fatal car accident along with a nephew. Additionally, the senator’s granddaughter also passed away under sorrowful circumstances.
Although Senator Moro did not formally request a Senate discussion on the matter, the Senate President stressed the importance of recognizing the grief experienced by their colleague.
“Colleagues, it is with great sadness that I inform you of the loss suffered by our Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro. Within 48 hours, he lost his son, who had just completed his university education, in a tragic motor accident. His nephew and granddaughter also died under heartbreaking conditions,” Akpabio stated.
“While no formal motion was made to debate this, I believe it is fitting for us, as members of this esteemed chamber, to observe a minute of silence in memory of these young Nigerians whose lives were cut short.”
After the moment of silence, the Senate President announced that plans were underway for senators to visit Senator Moro’s home to offer their condolences personally, with transportation arranged outside the National Assembly complex.
The chamber remained solemn as members reflected on the profound loss, many silently praying for comfort and strength for the bereaved family.
Senator Abba Moro, who previously served as Minister of Interior, is a respected and influential voice within the Senate. His absence from the day’s session was deeply noted, with colleagues expressing their heartfelt support and sympathy during this difficult time.
