Renowned Nigerian artist and songwriter Tiwatope Savage, widely known as Tiwa Savage, recently opened up about the distressing experience surrounding the leak of her private sex tape in 2021. She revealed that the video’s release was tied to a wager, marking one of the most harrowing chapters in her life.
In a heartfelt discussion on ‘The Breakfast Club’ aired Tuesday, Tiwa Savage shared how the incident profoundly impacted her emotional well-being, career trajectory, and personal relationships.
The celebrated Afrobeats vocalist also disclosed that she has chosen to remain celibate for the past three years, focusing on emotional depth rather than fleeting encounters.
Initially, Savage coped by using humor and channeling her pain into her music, but she acknowledged that the trauma left deep emotional wounds.
“When I spoke about the tape, it was my way of trying to process the pain. But looking back, I realize I hadn’t truly healed. I was deeply hurt… I was a victim,” she reflected.
She recounted that her former partner initially claimed the leak was accidental, but she later uncovered that it was actually part of a bet among his friends. “He said he was trying to save the video but accidentally sent it. Later, I found out it was a game he was playing with his friends,” she explained.
Savage also addressed the false rumors suggesting she leaked the tape intentionally to gain publicity.
“Many assumed I staged it for attention. People said, ‘She’s lost relevance, so she’s doing this.’ Honestly, if I wanted that, I would have ensured better lighting and production,” she remarked with a hint of irony.
“We attempted to discuss it openly, but the trauma was overwhelming. I just wanted to put it behind me,” she added.
One of the most painful aspects for her was the backlash that involved her son, with critics questioning her fitness as a mother.
“They dragged my son into the controversy and questioned my ability as a parent. That stung far more than the leak itself,” she shared.
The experience continues to influence her artistry, with certain songs still too emotionally charged for her to perform live. Despite the hardship, Tiwa credits her family, especially her mother, for providing unwavering support.
“My mom called me and said, ‘Don’t pay attention to the negativity. I’m just glad you’re finding joy.’ Hearing that from her was a huge comfort,” she recalled.
Therapy has played a crucial role in her recovery, and she emphasized her commitment to meaningful relationships over casual intimacy, highlighting her three-year celibacy.
“I’m not sure if I can separate emotions from intimacy anymore. I’ve gone about three years without being with anyone. I need a genuine connection to even consider it. I don’t have any toys-maybe that’s what people should gift me for Christmas,” she joked.
