Governor Dr. Alex Otti of Abia State has announced plans to elevate tourism as a key economic driver by fully harnessing the state’s rich potential in this sector.
Speaking at the 2025 World Tourism Day celebration held in Umuahia, the state capital, themed “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” Otti emphasized the importance of tourism in economic development.
Represented by his chief of staff, Caleb Ajagba, the governor highlighted how countries like Dubai, Israel, and Brazil have successfully leveraged tourism to stimulate their economies.
He expressed optimism that the event’s theme would inspire a renewed focus on utilizing culture, arts, and tourism as catalysts for meaningful societal change.

Matthew Ekwuribe, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, elaborated on the theme’s intent to reshape perspectives on tourism planning, investment, and engagement.
He stressed the imperative for tourism to serve as a platform for sustainable progress, inclusive economic growth, environmental responsibility, and transformative development.

“The government is actively restoring historical landmarks, upgrading transportation networks, and enhancing hotel and hospitality facilities, while also initiating eco-tourism projects,” Ekwuribe explained.
He added that efforts are underway to build strong partnerships within the hospitality sector, digitize Abia’s cultural heritage, and empower women, youth, and creative entrepreneurs to thrive within the tourism ecosystem.

The celebration featured a vibrant program including art exhibitions, theatrical performances, cultural showcases, interactive discussions, and messages of goodwill from various stakeholders.
Keynote presentations included Vivian Okpaleke’s lecture on “Strategies for Profitable Tourism Management in the Modern Era” and Solomon Uwakwe’s talk on “Cultivating Excellent Customer Service for Sustainable Tourism Advancement.”
