Tributes flowed abundantly for the late Dr. Doyin Abiola, Nigeria’s pioneering female editor of a national newspaper, former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the National Concord, and widow of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election. The evening of homage took place on Tuesday night in Lagos, drawing a host of distinguished Nigerians.

Among those who expressed their heartfelt condolences were Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun; Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake; former Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola (SAN); Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka; and many others. Their messages resonated deeply with the media fraternity, the nation, and the bereaved family, honoring the legacy of the trailblazing first female editor.

In her tribute, the First Lady described Dr. Abiola as more than just a pioneer-she was a visionary whose intellect and bravery shattered glass ceilings for women and set a benchmark of excellence. “As Nigeria’s first female editor of a national newspaper, The National Comfort, she challenged the male-dominated media landscape, demonstrating through her courage, wisdom, and integrity that women are vital architects of our national story,” she remarked.

She further highlighted Dr. Abiola’s significant contributions to Nigerian journalism, noting how her fearless leadership and editorial prowess paved the way for countless women in media and public service. Her dedication fortified the nation’s journalistic standards and amplified voices advocating truth and progress.

The First Lady also praised Dr. Abiola’s incisive columns that boldly confronted power structures. She was a formidable leader, writer, publisher, and manager who nurtured talent and inspired a generation of young professionals. Beyond her professional achievements, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and patriot, living a life marked by purpose and service to both family and country.

She emphasized that Dr. Abiola’s greatness was measured not by titles but by the profound impact she left behind. “Our nation mourns the loss of an extraordinary daughter, yet her enduring legacy remains etched in our collective memory,” she concluded.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State reflected on Dr. Abiola’s multifaceted role, describing her as a woman who gracefully balanced politics, family, national sacrifice, and the dignity of royalty. “She is remembered in history not because she was handed opportunities, but because she earned them through merit,” he said.

Recalling personal interactions, the governor shared, “She was a quiet yet powerful presence, making critical decisions without seeking recognition. I often received her thoughtful messages of encouragement and strength.”

“On behalf of Lagos State’s government and people, I extend our deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones. I cherish the memories and lessons she shared over the years,” he added.

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola delivered a heartfelt and reflective address, honoring Dr. Doyinsola Abiola as a woman of steadfast principles who upheld integrity above all else. He praised her exceptional ability to analyze both local and global issues, describing her insights on governance and national development as a testament to “the brilliance of human intellect.”

Fashola recalled a notable 2014 email from Dr. Abiola titled “ABC’s Reason,” which offered a compelling critique of democratic accountability. She reminded him that democracy flourishes only when citizens hold leaders responsible and reject arrogance in public discourse. Her words reflected her deep commitment to justice and democratic ideals.

He concluded by noting that the global outpouring of tributes underscored her lasting influence. “True greatness never fades; it evolves. Dr. Abiola’s legacy continues to inspire millions,” he affirmed.

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun described Dr. Abiola as a quintessential mother, distinguished journalist, and national icon whose life embodied purpose, integrity, and exemplary service. He emphasized her patriotic role alongside her husband during the June 12 struggle, highlighting her as a pillar of strength.

“Her passing is a profound loss not only to her family but to Nigeria’s media and democratic institutions,” he said. “She was a trailblazer who redefined what women could achieve in Nigerian journalism, using her intellect and leadership to shape public discourse and champion press freedom.”

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole shared a personal reflection on Dr. Abiola’s mentorship. “I often marvel at how she balanced immense responsibilities with grace. She encouraged me to embrace challenges and supported my career wholeheartedly,” she said.

Oduwole noted that Dr. Abiola’s guidance extended beyond professional advice, preparing her for life’s complexities including marriage, power, politics, and societal roles.

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka remembered Dr. Abiola as a steadfast supporter of the June 12 presidential election movement. “She managed the family’s legacy and the media platform with unwavering dedication, keeping the spirit of resistance alive even under oppressive regimes,” he said. “Doyin was the quiet backbone of a historic struggle.”

Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake spoke emotionally about their close friendship, recalling how she affectionately referred to him as “the brother of my aunt.” He shed light on her lesser-known role as a fierce opponent of imperialism and a key intellectual force behind strategic campaigns and leadership planning.

In a touching tribute, Mrs. Doyinsola Abiola Tebun, the late editor’s daughter, expressed deep gratitude for her mother’s unwavering support and love. “You never complained and always aimed to bring joy to my life,” she said.

She described her mother as a global citizen who remained proudly Nigerian, committed to contributing solutions despite the country’s challenges. “I witnessed your quiet activism during the June 12 struggle, marked by steadfast resolve rather than fanfare,” she recalled.

Mrs. Tebun highlighted her mother’s selflessness, noting that she never sought recognition for her role in Nigeria’s democratic transition but gave her time, intellect, and resources generously, even risking her life for her beliefs.

Reflecting on her mother’s perfectionism, she said, “How do I honor the best writer I have ever known? She was meticulous, editing tirelessly and refusing to compromise on quality.”

She also praised her mother’s loyalty and commitment as a wife, supporting her husband’s vision with unwavering respect, even in disagreement. “Your honor for him endured until your last breath, teaching me the true meaning of partnership,” she said.

Recalling childhood memories, Mrs. Tebun shared how her mother made Nigeria feel like home, fostering a love for the country through vibrant holidays and encouraging a sense of national pride even while abroad.

She recounted how her mother’s support never faltered, especially when she decided to return to Nigeria permanently, always encouraging her to pursue her studies and life goals seriously.

“When I called you from Stanford at 3 a.m., anxious about an exam, you listened calmly, reassured me, and reminded me I was not alone,” she fondly remembered.

Even in preparing for her mother’s final farewell, Mrs. Tebun felt supported, noting, “Mummy, you waited for me, giving me precious time to return home. For this, I thank God.”

The tribute night was graced by numerous notable figures, including former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako Oyedele, Arise News founder and editor-in-chief Prince Nduka Obaigbena, and former Senior Media Adviser to President Buhari, Femi Adesina.
