South African sensation Tyla has once again clinched the Best Afrobeats title at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) for her chart-topping track Push 2 Start. The ceremony, hosted at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Sunday, marked a significant achievement for the 23-year-old artist, who previously won the same category in 2024 with her breakthrough hit Water.
In a fiercely contested category, Tyla triumphed over a stellar lineup of nominees, including Nigerian stars such as Asake with Active, Burna Boy featuring Travis Scott for TaTaTa, Rema with Baby (Is It A Crime), Tems featuring Asake on Get It Right, Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz for Piece of My Heart, and the collaborative remix Shake It to the Max (Fly) by Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea. Although Push 2 Start was also nominated for Best Choreography, it did not secure that award.
Making a memorable impression on the red carpet, Tyla donned a captivating vintage Chanel gown from the 1990s, showcasing her unique style and flair.
The event celebrated a diverse array of musical talents beyond Afrobeats. Lady Gaga dominated the night, taking home four awards including Artist of the Year. Ariana Grande earned Video of the Year for Brighter Days Ahead and honored Mariah Carey with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Sabrina Carpenter won Album of the Year for Short n’ Sweet, while Busta Rhymes received the inaugural Rock the Bells Visionary Award, highlighting his enduring influence.
Broadcast live on CBS for the first time, the 2025 VMAs also introduced the Latin Icon Award, which was bestowed upon Ricky Martin, underscoring the ceremony’s commitment to celebrating global music culture and its dynamic evolution.
