How ‘The Wedding Party’ Rekindled My Pride in Nollywood Like Never Before

Among the many landmark moments in Nollywood’s journey, one film stands out for media expert Japheth Josiah as a source of immense pride: The Wedding Party.

In this installment of Nollyphile Life, a series dedicated to Nigerian film enthusiasts and their passion for Nollywood, Josiah shares why the 2016 hit struck a chord with him, how it authentically portrayed Nigerian culture, and the way it transformed industry expectations.

Which Nollywood movie made you feel proud as a fan?

Without hesitation, it’s The Wedding Party. That was the one that truly stood out.

Was there a particular scene or aspect that sparked that sense of pride?

The film’s portrayal of affluent Nigerian lifestyles was what really resonated. The lavish celebrations, the interpersonal conflicts, and the overall extravagance were depicted in a way that felt genuine yet captivating. Often, there’s a risk of losing cultural authenticity when trying to impress, but this movie struck a perfect harmony. It showcased a side of Nigeria that was both aspirational and relatable.

Scene from The Wedding Party
What elements of the film impressed you the most-story, acting, production, or something else?

The standout features were the production quality and performances. While the plot contained familiar Nollywood drama, it was elevated by excellent cinematography and the cast’s chemistry. This wasn’t limited to romantic connections; the family dynamics, subtle rivalries, and comedic timing all felt natural. Zainab Balogun’s portrayal of the event planner was particularly memorable, commanding attention throughout.

Did you watch it in theaters, via streaming, or at home? How did that influence your viewing experience?

I didn’t catch it in cinemas initially but saw it later on. Even outside the theater, the humor remained fresh and genuinely entertaining, never feeling forced. The comedy translated well regardless of the setting.

Do you think the film accurately reflected Nigerian culture? In what ways?

Absolutely. While it wasn’t a grand historical epic, it captured the contemporary Nigerian wedding experience vividly-the drama, unexpected guests, boisterous families, and cultural diversity. The costumes beautifully showcased Nigerian traditions, making it feel like a truly Nigerian story, even though it focused on the upper class.

Which character or performance left the strongest impression on you?

Zainab Balogun’s event planner role was unforgettable. Beyond her, the ensemble cast’s synergy was impressive. Each character felt authentic and integral to the story, with plot developments that kept me engaged rather than predictable.

Did the film challenge any preconceived notions you had about Nollywood?

Definitely. The film’s polished look-costumes, sets, and overall production-felt deliberate and high-end. It dispelled the stereotype that Nollywood films are low-budget or hastily made, proving the industry can deliver grandeur while staying true to Nigerian roots.

Cast of The Wedding Party
Would you suggest this film to someone new to Nollywood? Why?

Without a doubt. It’s part of my top ten Nollywood recommendations for newcomers. The film is approachable, humorous, distinctly Nigerian, and exemplifies the industry at one of its peak moments.

Do you believe it set a new standard for Nollywood productions?

Yes, it raised the bar significantly. Following its success, many filmmakers aimed to replicate its blend of comedy and spectacle, inspiring a push for higher quality across the board.

If you could alter one aspect of the movie to improve it, what would it be?

Honestly, I would have preferred it remain a standalone film. Nollywood sequels often fail to capture the original’s magic. While exceptions like King of Boys exist, generally, sequels dilute the impact. Wrapping up the story in one film would have been ideal.
