Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has firmly stated that neither intimidation nor public disparagement will influence his actions. His sole focus remains on fulfilling his duties as mandated by President Bola Tinubu and seeking divine approval.
During the inauguration of the Access Roads ILS 02 and ILS 03 (Timipre Sylva Street) construction project in Abuja’s Mabushi District on Monday, Wike openly condemned those attempting to coerce him into compromising his values through blackmail.
“If you want, gather yourselves and act in ways I know are wrong. Cry from dawn till dusk, label me with any name, spread falsehoods about me online-say whatever you please,” he challenged.
Wike acknowledged that blackmail is a frequent weapon wielded against politicians but affirmed that such tactics would not sway him.
“I am not the type to be shaken by blackmail. My resolve is unbreakable. Any seasoned politician understands that criticism is inevitable. So why be disturbed? No experienced politician expects universal praise. Just rest easy,” he asserted.
He further explained that the only circumstance that would cause him concern is if President Tinubu, his appointing authority, expressed dissatisfaction with his work.
“From the moment I embraced politics, I accepted that people would say all sorts of things. So, let them talk. The only thing that would trouble me is if my principal is unhappy with my performance. But if you think blackmail will force me to abandon my principles because we’re not meeting your demands, you’re mistaken. Civil servants present, if you know those organizing these protests, call them off. This approach won’t succeed,” Wike warned.
The minister also took aim at contractors and interest groups who, in his view, are trying to impose their own priorities on the government.
“Consider a nation where ministers oversee contracts worth ₦19-20 billion, and then some parties claim, ‘You owe us money.’ I decide what takes precedence. Representing Mr. President, I set the agenda. You cannot dictate our priorities,” he emphasized.
Wike reiterated that his administration’s focus is on delivering essential infrastructure and social services to FCT residents.
“I understand the needs of the people, which is why we are launching these road projects. Contractors aren’t paid daily-that’s just how things work here. Our citizens require hospitals, schools, and quality roads,” he stated.
In closing, the minister made it clear that his goal is not to win popularity.
“I have never sought to be popular. No, I don’t desire to be liked by everyone. My only aim is to please God,” he concluded.
