Wike Launches Major 15km Karshi Road Rehabilitation Project

Yesterday, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, officially launched the restoration of the 15-kilometre stretch of Old Karshi Road. He highlighted this initiative as a fulfillment of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the citizens and a clear indication of his administration’s dedication to revitalizing infrastructure.

The rehabilitation project covers the route from Kado Village to Dei-Dei and has been entrusted to Lubrik Construction Company, the same contractor responsible for the successful completion of Saburi 1 and Saburi 2 roads.

Wike characterized the road upgrade as an urgent intervention, authorized by the president shortly after taking office in 2023, emphasizing that it directly addresses the community’s pressing needs, as advocated by their elected officials.

“When we inaugurated the Saburi roads, I mentioned that their completion hinged on the refurbishment of Old Karshi Road,” he recalled.

“Today, by God’s grace, we are here to honor that pledge. I assured the traders and residents that this was more than just words-it is a promise we intend to keep,” he affirmed.

The minister also commended Hon. Christopher Maikalangu, chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), for his proactive and effective leadership.

“During the Saburi Road commissioning, I asked him to identify further community needs,” Wike said.

“He pointed out the necessity of rehabilitating Old Karshi Road. This exemplifies true representation-selecting leaders who understand and actively pursue the priorities of their people,” he added.

Taking a pointed stance against opposition critics, Wike cautioned residents against being misled by “hollow narratives” from those who have previously failed to deliver results.

“Do not be swayed by individuals who had chances to advance Abuja’s development but repeatedly fell short,” he warned.

“We gave them two opportunities, and they failed both times. Granting them a third would only lead to further setbacks,” he stressed.

“In total, 27 projects are set to be launched-an unprecedented scale for Abuja,” Wike noted. “This milestone is being achieved under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.”

He further instructed the construction firm to prioritize hiring local youth and women, ensuring the community gains economic advantages from the project.

In her closing remarks, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and focus on initiatives that directly improve citizens’ lives.

She underscored the road’s vital role, stating, “This thoroughfare is essential for thousands of daily commuters, connecting neighborhoods, shortening travel times, enhancing safety, and boosting economic activities throughout the region.”
