Community Youths Take a Stand Against Drug Abuse in Nkpolu, Rivers State
drug abuse in Nkpolu”>
In Nkpolu, a community within the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, local youths have taken decisive action against drug abuse by apprehending a serving police officer and two other men suspected of using hard drugs. This bold move is part of a broader anti-drug campaign initiated by the community’s youth leadership in response to the alarming rise in substance abuse.
Rising Drug Abuse Sparks Community Outcry
The youth leaders of Nkpolu have expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of drug addiction on their community. Many families have reportedly lost their homes and valuable assets as a result of drug dependency. According to the Youth President, Owhonda Chamberlain, the situation has reached a critical point, prompting the youths to take matters into their own hands to restore peace and safety.
Confrontation at a Known Drug Hideout
Reports indicate that the youths raided a location known for drug activities, where they detained three individuals, including a police officer named Joshua Eyong, who serves in the Obio/Akpor Local Council division. Eyong identified himself by presenting his service ID but did not contest the accusations brought against him by the community members.
Youth Leadership’s Firm Stance Against Drug Dealers
Chamberlain emphasized the community’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug use and trafficking. He revealed that many young people in Nkpolu have been forced into homelessness due to addiction, with some even selling family properties to sustain their drug habits. “After spending millions on drugs, they end up selling their homes for slightly more, only to receive a fraction of that from dealers,” he explained.
He further stated, “Nkpolu is committed to eradicating drug dealers and users from our community. If anyone wishes to engage in such activities, they should do so elsewhere, such as in Rumuaghorlu or designated hotels. Drug abuse will no longer be tolerated here.”
Community-Led Initiatives and Broader Implications
This grassroots campaign reflects a growing trend across Nigeria, where local communities are increasingly mobilizing to combat drug-related issues amid rising national concerns. According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), drug abuse among Nigerian youths has surged by over 20% in recent years, underscoring the urgency of such interventions.
Nkpolu’s approach highlights the power of community engagement and youth leadership in addressing social challenges. By confronting offenders directly and raising awareness, they aim to foster a safer environment and reduce the social and economic toll of drug addiction.
