Aliyu Zubairu, the head coach of the Flying Eagles, has shared insights into Nigeria’s strategic approach ahead of their FIFA U20 World Cup Round of 16 encounter with Argentina, according to Soccernet.ng.
Scheduled for 8:30 pm Nigerian time, the seven-time African champions aim to replicate their 2023 success against the South American giants after progressing from the group stage as the top-ranked third-placed team.
Notably, Nigeria eliminated Argentina on their home turf two years ago, securing a 2-0 victory in San Juan thanks to goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki.
This rematch will take place at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, with a coveted quarter-final spot on the line.
Coach Zubairu’s Tactical Blueprint Against Argentina
Zubairu emphasized that his squad has meticulously analyzed Argentina’s gameplay, identifying both their strengths and vulnerabilities. The Nigerian side plans to capitalize on the gaps left by the six-time world champions.
“We have thoroughly studied Argentina’s style and strengths, and our goal is to counteract them effectively,” Zubairu explained. “We’ve pinpointed areas where they are less strong, and we intend to exploit those. On Wednesday, we will implement our strategy based on these observations, aiming for victory.”
Resilience Shown in Grueling Group Stage
The Flying Eagles emerged from a challenging group that included Saudi Arabia and Colombia, finishing with four points and argentina-flying-eagles-arrive-chile-u20-world-cup/” title=”… Touch Down in Chile's Largest City Ready for Thrilling U20 World Cup Showdown Against …”>securing qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
Their 1-1 draw with Colombia was pivotal, with captain Daniel Bameyi converting a late penalty after Nigeria had hit the post three times.
Coach Zubairu highlighted that this determined display will be crucial against an Argentine team that dominated their group with a perfect nine points.
“As the tournament advances, the level of competition intensifies. Colombia posed a tough, physical challenge with a direct style, but we managed to overcome that,” he remarked.
Despite Argentina’s flawless group stage record, Zubairu downplayed its significance, stressing that knockout rounds demand a fresh mindset.
“Argentina’s nine points are commendable, and we respect their achievement. However, once you reach the knockout phase, previous points don’t carry over-it’s a completely different contest,” he added.

Looking to Recreate 2023 Triumph
Coach Zubairu is confident that Nigeria’s belief in themselves and their tactical discipline will be key factors, recalling how similar preparation led to their victory over Argentina in the previous U20 World Cup.
“I recall the last time we faced them in the U-20 World Cup they hosted. Despite them topping their group with nine points and us finishing second, we still managed to defeat them. We intend to replicate that success,” he affirmed.
However, Nigeria will miss Sulaiman Sani due to suspension after accumulating two yellow cards during the group matches. This absence is likely to prompt a reshuffle in the attacking lineup, potentially pairing Tahir Maigana with Kparobo Arierhi upfront.
The Flying Eagles traveled from Talca to Santiago on Monday, conducted a training session on Tuesday evening, and are set to translate their preparations into performance when they face Argentina today.
